I find my design intentions sway between environmental, toy, or soft good production, yet I always draw inspiration from the natural world out of appreciation for it. My most life-changing, soul-touching moments were in the presence of nature–sun rays on my skin between the plateaus of New Mexico, the brightest stars above me in the Arizona night sky, rain sprinkling my face atop the Weminuche mountain range, Colorado (my own original photography above). We’ve grown accustomed to living separate from the environment, trying to live above it, control it, and drain it, so I honor my relationship with nature and extend its necessity to others through my work. By integrating life science into everyday design, I aim to draw appreciation to what’s here on Earth around us so that we can be integrated into the natural world, assuming our positions as members of a global ecosystem. While I have worked with several youth groups, I believe that the idea that our world’s health is left to “the younger generation” is dangerously false; we must all play a part, and that starts with awareness and education through design.
